Herpes Creates A Social Stigma

Ask anyone on the street about herpes, and they will probably give you a strange look of disgust. Mention a few statistics published by the National Disease Centre, and people will probably frown their face even more.

Whilst many people do understand what the herpes virus is, a majority of the population do not understand how widespread it is, and how easy it is to be infected with it. Unfortunately, out of all of the STD's that you run the risk of contracting when you have sex, herpes is one of the most commonly transmitted ones.

And, whilst people will tell you that the symptoms of herpes are not necessarily that bad, experts will point to a number of cases where the proof stands to have these people corrected.

People Don't Like It

The fact of the matter is that people do not like the sight or sound of essentially transmitted diseases. This taboo topic as one which people are afraid to even speak of, let alone encounter in their own personal lives.

It goes on to follow that if you yourself have an STD, chatting about it with friends will probably not go down too well. Indeed, the social stigma which is present in our society surrounding these types of issues is alive and well.

And what makes it worse is that many people know this, and are therefore afraid to bring the topic up when it is necessary to do so.

Dating Effects

Another effect that this could have on people is that they become afraid of dating. Whilst a few inappropriate actions could have led to them being infected earlier on in life, the person may now have changed, and may have a new outlook on life.

However, whilst this change may be beneficial, the fact that they have had herpes in the past may still hold them back from going out on the dating scene.

Recurring symptoms, social stigma, and the never-ending battle to keep symptoms under control will all take its toll eventually. For this reason, society needs to come up with new and innovative ways to deal with such issues. Perhaps it is time to get over the immaturity, and actually confront such an issue head on.

Of course, this will be left up to society to decide upon.
